Event Poster designed for the Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion Workshop Series
I started working for the Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion at York University just over month ago. One of my first assignments was designing graphics and developing event promotional materials for an upcoming workshop series. I looked no further than the See Red Women's Workshop for inspiration. The SRWW is the feminist artists' collective from the 1970s, which is responsible for some of the most iconic images in feminist pop art. Just a few weeks ago, I saw the familiar clenched fist inside a woman sign on a student's t-shirt at the University of Toronto campus. I wondered if young feminists know about the origin of their iconic t-shirt designs. Partly out of the limitations of design tools back in the 1970s, the designs may appear to us now as unpolished. But, they definitely have a retro vibe. I used a halftone filter to give the photographs a vintage look and played around with colours that would look good with York University's branding elements, especially that attractive red border. I got good guidance and advice from York's central communications team about which elements and versions of the logo to use and the final design is now currently displayed all over the campus on screens that flash campus reminders/events.
For the succeeding half of the REDI sessions, I updated the graphic:
