The man behind the term 'microaggressions'

This short video narrated by my colleague, Melissa Theodore, talks about the Harvard-trained medical doctor and psychiatrist, Dr. Chester Pierce, who coined the now familiar term 'microaggressions.' 'Chet' Pierce was also the first-ever African American college football player to play in the south (1947) while racial segregation was still legal in the southern states of the U.S.

I created the animation on Canva and used copyright-free music from Bensound.

What I liked about this project is that it provides a glimpse into the person behind the terminology, and an insight into what the person's life and experiences were that shaped their contribution.

I made a video about Intersectionality for my Women and Gender Studies class in 2020, but I still had not gotten the knack for really short punchy scripts. That video was far too long, and I'm thinking about editing it. This one is just right. I actually separated another portion that discusses the way contemporary psychiatrists have expanded the use of 'microaggressions' to refer to the experiences of various marginalized groups beyond the racial type of microaggressions.
